Games like Hades on iPhone

The first thing worth knowing is that you cannot simply buy Hades on the App Store.

Searching the US App Store for Hades does not return the game as a standalone purchase. On iPhone it has been distributed through Netflix Games, which means it is tied to a Netflix subscription: the game is there while you pay for Netflix, and gone when you stop. That is a reasonable deal for some people and a dealbreaker for others, and it is worth knowing before you go looking.

If you want to own the thing

These are roguelikes you buy once on the App Store and keep, with prices checked by hand rather than remembered.

What REELS shares with Hades

  • A run structure where every attempt teaches you the machine a little better, and permanent unlocks carry between attempts.
  • Bosses that shift partway through. In REELS a boss drops into a rage phase, and the fight you had learned stops existing.
  • Build variety per run, from charms that combine rather than stack numbers.

What it does not share, plainly

Hades is a story game with an extraordinary cast, full voice acting and hand drawn art, made by a studio of dozens. REELS has none of that. It is a one person game about a slot machine you take into a pit, it runs offline, and it is bought once.
